    describing a rock

    April 17, 2018 by Falsebooles123

"describing a rock" is a podcast narrated by Milo Axelrod .  I stumbled upon this podcast earlier this evening and I'm glad I did. Describing a rock is an interesting experience, it sounds like some sort of obscure ASMR video deep inside the YouTube algorythm but the podcast is a lot more then it seems. Often the episodes follow a very smooth melodic flow, calm and introspective. If the podcast wasn't so mundane I could easily believe it was written by Cranor or Fink. Not that its mundaneness is a bad thing. When Axelrod describes each rock she goes into the history of  how she found it and the feelings and ideas assosciated with it. Just as in the description, "The rock is more than just a rock".  Each episode is poignant with thoughtful…

    Archive 81 Part 2

    January 14, 2018 by Falsebooles123

    Warning: Possible Spoilers

Archive 81 Season 2 answers the question that was on fans minds since the finale of Season 1. "Is Dan still Alive", the answer thankfully is an astounding yes. The answer to the question "Is Dan still Dan" is more up to debate. Season 2 of Archive 81 is a excellent sequal to the first season and is a bit more freeform. This season was a season of expansion, more characters more agendas, a larger workarea, and access to the full archive. Not to mention a bizare twisted city filled with eldritch beasts that bleeds into are world. Heavily inspired by the works of H.P.Lovecraft, The season has Dan being set up  as a "map maker" for the city. Guiding a scout group though the city filled with so many dangers. So, Many,…

    Archive 81

    January 8, 2018 by Falsebooles123

Archive 81 is an  interesting podcast.

Created by Dead Signals, Archive 81 is a found audio podcast. Dan Powell is missing and his friend, Mark Sollinger, wants to find him. All Mark knows is that his friend Dan was employed by the Housing Historical Committee of New York State to archive audio tapes from their extensive collection after that he dissappeared off the face of the earth. Oh and Dan also sent him 100s of hours of audio file. One thing that makes Archive 81 interesting is its use of framing devices, the story unfolds in two fronts, with the general isolation and cabin fever of Dan and with the mystery of Melody Pendras the voices on the tapes of Archive 81. This alternating style helps provide a change of pace to the story and t…

    Creepy

    October 30, 2017 by Falsebooles123

The Creepy Podcast is part of the Bloody Disgusting Podcast Network and hosted and narrated by Jon Grilz the Creator of Small Town Horror.

If your on the internet alot like I am, you might be familiar with creepypastas. For the uninitiated a creepypasta is a short fiction horror storys shared over the internet, and as Creepy says "a podcast dedicated to sharing the most famous, chilling, and disturbing creepypastas and urban legends in the world". Unlike the horror giants that have come before Psuedopod and NoSleep, Creepy focuses on narrating the creepypastas that are regarded as the best of the best. their Episode pedigree includes such storys as Dead Bart, The Rake, Smile Dog, Candle Cove, Squidwards Suicide, and it keeps on going.

    Uncanny County

    October 12, 2017 by Falsebooles123

Since season two just came out for Uncanny County I thought I would Talk about it.

Uncanny County is a Audio Drama Anthology created by Todd Faulkner and Allison Crane. And it is amazing. Drawing alot of inspiration from radio theather,(they even have a episode with Orsen Welles). Uncanny County reachs just over the state line to the Twilight Zone. Some episodes like "Home is where the spice is" and "A thing for machines" draw heavely on 70s B-movies. While others Like "Mother loves you" and "Coulrophobia" are straight up horror. No matter what genre the storys are playing the episodes bring sarcasm, wit, and just the slight amount of ridiculous to it.

The way that uncanny county is written is a distintive, like a more realistic Twilight Zo…

    The Black Tapes

    October 10, 2017 by Falsebooles123

Disclaimer: Article may contain light swear words. You have been warned.

I know I've probaly said this a million times. But The Black Tapes is one of my most favorite podcasts of all times. I've covered every tiny thing I love and hate about it in my episode recaps. So let me just talk about its horror qualitys. The Black Tapes take their horror as a background and spin a story onto it. Theres alot of horror and scary moments in The Black Tapes but to scare the crud out of you is not the main point of the show. The Black Tapes is not a horror podcast rather I would say it is a horror mystery. Sometimes your listen about how a man shoves a ice pick though his heart the next second your listining to an interesting conversation about bees and …

Warning: This blog contains major spoilers from the second season of The Black Tapes. you have been warned.

The Season Two finale did everything right it finally answered a question for once and brought are tiny view of the world into full blast. First things first, Cora Lee's Alive! and also a secret agent for a mysterious organization that might or might not be assosciated with a bunch of old goddess worshiping baby whisperers. But, still alive personaly I really enjoyed their interacting it was strange and completly mind-blowing but it is also a sign of the series finally closing the loop on some of the long asked questions. Like why she dissapeared and if shes still alive. Besides that the series drops bombshell after bombshell onto us …

    About a Boy E211

    September 17, 2017 by Falsebooles123

About a boy is where things finally start to heat up. We finally get the scoop of the Bobby Maimes and how Strand used his some nice precognition to find a dead body. Giving how the second part of the season is set up there isn't really much to say about the episode. It mostly is just Nic and Alex sitting at PNWS Talking and filling in some storyholes. Its interesting but in the way of reviewing it theres not much to go on. No New Storys, No Guest Stars, Just A few Spoiler inducing surprises and a cliff-hanger that begins to answer one of the series biggest questions.

Welcome to the Machine like the last episode seems to run together. when the Black Tapes is here to tell a story it doesn't bother itself with selfcontained story arcs. Overall I really enjoyed the episode they went into detail about the "Exocism Machine" this strange black monalithic device that combines science and religion for some synester purpose, The Sagamore and (Finally) The Boy in the River. Personally I'm glad they decided to come back to the Sagamore like the Exocism episode using the second season to reference the first is a great way to bring the series closer together while also giving a reason to relisten to old episodes it brings the story into context.  I also really enjoyed the paranormal Researcher that they brought in. …

Brothers of the mount is a solid episode while it doesn't have any clear high points it brings along a consistent story. Truth be told season two of the black tapes is not the traditional story sometimes it feels like im just listining to a single episode stretched out over multiple recordings. It doesn't make it bad and the style works for Tanis and Rabbits but it allows for some episodes to be without the rise and falls of more episodic, procedual storys. There was alot about the episode I liked, some great revalations and hints that I can't get into without major spoilers but overall there isn't really anything that stands out from The Black Tapes Baseline. Casually Vicous murder check. Somebody recounting tragic past events check. Stra…

    Riverview E208

    September 14, 2017 by Falsebooles123

Personally Riverview is a bit hit and miss. The episode isn't bad per se but some of the elements don't quite fit. The found audion from Riverview was fascinating and the cliffhanger at the end was good but other parts of it fell flat. The unwanter flirtyness of Nic's Friend, Alex Regans absurd Cluelessness that was uncharteristic even for her and Richard Strands Quip about his friend being a woman expecially when Alex Phrased the statement gender neutraly are just strange, disengaging, and out of character. I did like what they did with simon reeses character but overall the episode fell kinda flat.

Personnaly Possessions is a step back not in quality of enjoyment mind you but a bit more lituraly. The episode starts off with a couple side conversations resolving a few loose ends and piloting a couple other subplots along, (Say what you will about the PNWS Podcasts but they can juggle there subplots), But then gets in the thick of it. Like the episodes of Season One it stands by itself telling a singuler narrative. Also like the Episodes from the first season it is also about Jessica Wheldon, The girl from the exorcism but this time its her side of the story. Personly I loved the episode it presented the story of Jessica Wheldon again but though the perspective of the second season and while the Strand side is telling me that Ms. Wheld…

    All in The Family e206

    September 12, 2017 by Falsebooles123

All in the Family Decides to get into the meat of the matter and to personly is the episode where the season shifts to the rising action the beginning begins fairly mundane a revulation that Cherly is Strands sister. Strand getting huffy and storming off incognito. Alex being an unethical journalist and sassy. You Know the usual. but then it starts to shift. First Alex voiceovers to admit that she was being kind of a jerk and then goes off to victoria to warn Strand and stick her nose in all the business. Personally I really liked the hotel scene the creepyness of the painting paired with the moments of intrigue. But the real shift is the call from Simon Reese. Simon Reese plays his hannibul-esque charecter perfectly.

    Simon: "Hey I'm a craz…

    Cheryl E205

    September 11, 2017 by Falsebooles123

Cheryl is a pretty interesting episode. It continues some of the subplots and finally allows us to see one of the black tapes for the first time in Season Two. Personal I enjoyed Cherly Much more then the previous episode. It laid back on the conspiricie. Actually Had Strand back in the episode for more than a Voice Stabs and Drama. Like of the black tapes there isnt really anything about the black tapes that stand out. The Black Tapes isn't procedial Crime drama. at the end of it Alex and Strand won't find the killer and be called "Meddiling Kids" they often leave off the episode on something interesting but it very really feels like a conclusion. Which makes sense In the world of the Black Tapes there are no cut and dry answers there dic…

    Voices Carry e204

    September 9, 2017 by Falsebooles123

After the Exitement of the Last Episode Voices Carry takes it back with conversations, Paranoid Conspiricies Theorys, and A little Unefficial journalism. That being said it's not a bad episode while it takes a little slope on the interest curve it builds a solid baseline with everything we love from the black tapes. Most of the story revolves around a couple conversations with nick and Special Guest Stars Tannis and Alex Regan's Insomnia. Overall there isn't Much to say about the episode, Its not heavily action-oriented or expostition heavy its really the cast catching their breath trying to figure things out and waxing a bit paranoid. There are a few leads some Recaping but overall except for the ending nothing really happens. Its not tha…

    Hush Little Baby E203

    September 8, 2017 by Falsebooles123

The Nice thing about season two is how organic it is The Story flows in an out with out much prompting from Strand. After Alex's fight with Strand Her own black tapes have been coming in. Personally I really like it. It makes Alex seem that she is in this world that she's a person you can come to when the paranormal shit hits the fan. It gives Alex a level of automony that isn't directed by Strands Monster-Of-The-Weeks Cases. And thats kinda the point. Alot of Season Two is hinting away at the larger systemic workings of the story while season one was interducing ideas and laying some groundwork. Its not just Simon anymore. The Torres boy these two children from the second and third episode. what is happining? What do the nearly identical …

Sleepless in Seattle Doesnt pull any punches it gets straight to the point of addressing the things the podcast brought up in the season fanale and then went straight to the jugular. With Strand gone on a angry leave of abscense Alex has to be both a believer and a skeptic in her own adventure. To Me the Fight between Strand and Alex just made me question the validity of their storys. it seems in a lot of cases Alex an Strand are two Unreliable Narrators telling two sides of the same story, They just dont know which side is which. But back to the Action! What I Really love about this episode, Beside the Title), is that essentially Alex has to play both parts The Skeptic and the Believer. As a Journalist she covers the Dicotomy fairly well …

Overall there is not much to say about Shadow Dancing. It was a good episode and it bought in a lot of interesting concepts for next season like the Ansari, The Advocate and Whether or not the Tapes are connected but overall it was just that A good run a nice time but something that while not being anticlimatic was also not clamatic. Which is fine. Its the First Season you dont have to save the world or get the girl or get kidnapped at the end of the episode sometimes you just have to set the framework and figure your life out.

Butt mostly revolves atound ales learning about the Codex Gigas a mysterious  and satany book that was the start of the order of the cenophus . overall the episode is fairly decent it tells a good story bringing the plot forward towards the season final which is what the last couple episodes have been gearing towards. There was alot to enjot and A lot that ppassed by. Their Satanic Monestary is when the season starts speading up. For the first episodes the black tapes started slow with condensed storys and a few connecting lines. but it comes into its own. their Satanic Monestary revolves around a Religous order called Order of the Cenophus the same order that Percieval Black is part of. There is a lot of mysteries brought up in this episode that tend to be more filled out as the seasons progress but never seem to be answered fully. What is the Order of the Cenophus, Why did they hold a seance? Who is Percieval Black? Where is Keith Dabic? The Episode doesnt answer any of these but at least fills in some of the smaller blanks. Board to Death E108

    August 20, 2017 by Falsebooles123

Board to Death is a great monster of the week episode. It was surprisingly deep adding layer and layer to the story intil the great reveal. I also think that the ouija board idea was excellent. Like the exocism episode in plays off some of are more supersticous fears while still telling a great story. they was some great moments of terror and a lot of connecting pieces trying the story together. I remember that some fans had a problem with season two that it was two interconnected instend of the more organic and episodic nature of the first season But the first season has a lot of thoughlines thoughout. motifs that underline a more larger narritive that we just haven't scene yet. great episode.

    The Devil Door

    August 19, 2017 by Falsebooles123

"This week we'll be digging into two of my least favorite aspects of paranormal investigation: demons, and psychiatrics hospitals." - Alex Regan

One of the things that I like about the black tapes is that it is an unabashed love for the paranormal and strange and its this episode that they really start to delve into it. The story takes a left turn on the formala when Dr. Strand makes a house call to the Three Rivers State Hospital. The plot essentially revolves around a locked room mystery. Late one night Fred Barnes was laying in his bed when he was attacked by Simon Reese. Except the door was locked and Simon Reese was in his room the whole time. Except Reese admitted to the attack. This little scenarion leads to such fun things as Sacred…

Almost all of the First Season is based on a Theme. The Devil You Know is Exorcism and givin the western adience it makes sense. Not that exocism doesn't exist in other cultures but has a certain perception in American Culture. Exocism are on the more frightining parts of our lore. Its something that is Judeo-Christian in Nature, but outside the range of confort. Its something alien, violent, wrong. something that only Catholic Priest with their rituals and faith can conquer. Its also something thats ingrained in to our collective conscience as an american. Even if one isn't a Christian the concept of Angels and Demons, Priests and Exocism are Familiar Concepts. Another Monster-of-the-Week Episode bringing The UpsideDown Face to the mix.

A hooded figure scaring a young woman to death. A Local Town Festival based off of a Grisly Tradition. This is episode 4.

Alex and Stand go to Charlesworth Washington to the Festival of the Upside Down Face, a macabue holiday inspired by a grisly murder from the '50s. Overall the details line up for a macabue story. the Death and Mutalation of Catherine Williams, the Grave Robberys, The argument about which girl is the ghost of if she is a ghost at all. It just works. The Upside Down Face hasn't shown up as much currently but hopefully in the third season we will get some answers.

    The Unsound E103

    August 18, 2017 by Falsebooles123

The Unsound is probably one of the most important episodes in the show mostly because of the beginning of keith Dabic story and the first hard mention of Cora Lee. But Regardless of its importanc its also an excellent episode Its spooky and unsettiling. and is one of the first times that the content made people anxious. Mostly, because of the Unsound. According to the lore, The unsound was found in the 1960's by an auntartican crew. A Mysterious sound that nobodys nows the orgin too. Some say that its a portal to release the Devil from hell. King Falls AM

    July 26, 2017 by Falsebooles123

King Falls Am is a podcast hosted by Ben Arnold (Noah James) and Sammy Stevens (Kyle Brown) and produced by the Make Believe Picture Company.

Like Nightvale and Gravity Falls before,(and the granddaddy of all Twin Peaks), King Falls AM deals with the preternatural happinings of a sleepy little mountain Mayberry.

Giving the premise, a radio station that deals with the supernatual and the paranormal my original impression was a welcome to nightvale clone but the actuallity is much different.

While it starts with a radio station and a voice the differences make themselves apparent. The extreme surrealism and blantent acceptence of the bizare and uncanny of Nightvale is replaced with a down to earth realism and actually generune skeptism. King Fa…

    Scared Yet?

    July 23, 2017 by Falsebooles123

Scared Yet? is a Podcast co-hosted by Kris Straub and Abby Howard where they discuss horror tropes and themes.

I think that its safe to say that Scared Yet? is one of my most favorite podcasts to date. Oh course I am biased. when I heard that the writers of two of the best horror storys I read recently where going to start a horror podcast I was thrilled to listen.

But let me take off my Rose Colored Glasses and Get down to brass tacks. Each episode follows a centrilized theme or topics such as creature design or the appropriate use of gore in horror. IT starts out with the intro music than Kris Straub humourously saying "Boo, Jump Scare" followed by 45 minute conversation about the topic at hand.

One of the strong parts of the podcast is Kri…
